Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena said that the construction of the first phase of the suspended Central Expressway will commence within the next two months.
The Deputy Minister stated that the approval of the China Exim Bank for the relevant loan installment is awaited.
He stated that the construction will resume as a result of the discussions held during President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s official visit to China.
The first phase of the Central Expressway is the section from Kadawatha to Mirigama.
The length of that section is 37 km.
The construction of a section that exceeds 20% of its construction has been completed by now.
Project Director Engineer Anuradha Hettiarachchi stated that the construction of the third phase of the Central Expressway has also been expedited.
He said that it is expected to be opened to the public by 2026.
The section from Pothuhera to Galagedara is part of the third phase of the Central Expressway.
Its length is 32.5 kilometers.
The construction of that section is being carried out with the contribution of local engineers and local funds.
Mr. Anuradha Hettiarachchi stated that the first phase, the section from Pothuhera to Rambukkana, which is 13.5 kilometers long, will be opened to the public first.
